Abstract:

Molecular design translates human intuition into chemical products with desired reactivity and properties. The power of molecular design will be demonstrated with examples from two different disciplines, inorganic and organic synthesis. The first part will focus on organometallic rare-earth reduction chemistry with an emphasis on low-valent metal arene complexes. A ferrocene diamide ligand played an important role in enabling unprecedented reactivity and stabilizing highly reactive species, including bimetallic C−H bond activation and a 6C, 10πe aromatic system. In the second part, I will describe a collaborative effort in designing thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters for OLEDs. The molecular design based on this newly developed synthetic methodology yielded highly efficient blue emitters with an external quantum efficiency up to 28%.

Biography:

Wenliang Huang is currently a postdoctoral associate working with Prof. Stephen L. Buchwald at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 2013 under the guidance of Professor Paula L. Diaconescu. Before that, he graduated from Peking University with a B.S. degree in 2008 and conducted research with the supervision of Prof. Yun-Dong Wu. His research interests are in the design and synthesis of rare-earth metal compounds with specific luminescent and/or magnetic properties for applications ranging from optic and electronic materials to bioimaging. In addition, he is also interested in small molecule activation and catalysis mediated by rare-earth metal complexes.
