Fuel cells Enable Zero Emissions Vehicles with Customer Convenience and a Low Infrastructure cost

Mike Sexsmith
Director of Research and Development Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Burnaby British Columbia

ABSTRACT
Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells are rapidly approaching large scale deployment in automobiles with several OEMs deploying commercial fleets. In recent year many of the historically large technical challenges in cost reduction and materials science have produced successful results.   This has resulted in a vehicle that offers Zero emission , a, high range, excellent driving dynamics, uncompromised cold weather operation and 3 minute refueling.   The remaining challenge is to industrialize fuel cell technology by developing optimized manufacturing processes, materials standards and thus a strong low cost supply chain.   Advances in Hydrogen fuel delivery technology have made it possible to have fueling stations which are easier to and less expensive to implement compared to Battery changing stations.   Incremental technology advancement, industrialization and the deployment of H2 Fuelling infrastructure will eliminate the remaining cost reduction needed for the commercial deployment of larger vehicle fleets.

Bio-sketch: Mike Sexsmith is the Director of Research and Development at AFCC. AFCC is a joint venture company of Daimler Ag and The Ford Motor Company and is responsible for the development of fuel cell stacks that will be deployed in Ford and Mercedes cars.. Mike has work in various aspect of the Fuel Cell Automotive industry for over 20 years and was part of the design team that developed the Mercedes NeCars, the Ford Focus , the Mercedes F-cell fleets as well as the stack that have been deployed in Commercial Bus programs. He is a Professional Engineer (.Eng) in British Columbia and received both his BASc .in Engineering Physics and MASc in Materials Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

Bio of Dr. Jing Li: Jing Li is the Principal Scientist of Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC). He has been working in material science and engineering for over 30 years, including research and development of fuel cell components and stacks in Ballard and AFCC since 2003, fiber optical components in JDSU, as well nanomaterial research in The Tokyo University and The University of Toronto. He had his PhD in Physical Chemistry and Material Science and worked also as a professor at Center South University of China. He published more than 60 papers, including a paper in Nature and 15 patents in fuel cells and nanomaterials。
